278.131 — Barth, Dr. Karl, 1950, Correspondence [12 leaves, including Schaeffer/Barth correspondence]. Early in 1950, Dr. Buswell wrote a review of a recent work by Dr. Karl Barth. With that review in recent history, when Buswell was able to attend the second plenary congress of the International Council of Christian Churches, as it met in Geneva, he was able to capitalize on the location of the meeting and arrange a personal visit with Dr. Barth at that time. Buswell then wrote a report of that meeting for the October 1950 issue of The Bible Today. In the meantime, Rev. Schaeffer had apparently written to Dr. Barth on 28 August 1950. That letter is lacking from our collection, but Dr. Barth's reply to Schaeffer is in this folder, along with a correcting transcription of the letter. Barth's original letter is on A4 onionskin (210mm x 297mm) and his typing ran slightly off the right side of the page. Apparently Buswell made corrections and had his secretary retype the letter. Note the corrected typescript has the English word "COPY" in red lettering and is on standard American letter paper, 8.5" x 11". Folder 131 also has an annotated photocopy of Dr. Barth's letter, with underlining in red pencil, by an unknown hand. The final correspondence in this folder is a letter from Buswell to Barth, dated 13 Septmeber 1950. Also in this folder are Buswell's working notes for a review of Barth's Against the Stream: Shorter Post-War Writings, 1946-52. (New York: Philosophical Library, 1954).
