Biographical sketch—
The Rev. Doctor Paul Gunter Settle, 82, servant of God, husband of Mary B. Aiken Russell Settle, died on Monday, 19 March 2018 in Greenville, SC. He was predeceased by his first wife, Georgia Brown Settle.

Born March 26, 1935 in Charleston, WV, son of Paul Cochran and Ruth Gunter Settle, he attended WV University, graduated from Bob Jones University in Greenville, SC, and prepared for the ministry at Columbia Theological Seminary, Decatur, GA.

Upon graduation from Columbia, he was ordained to the gospel ministry by Kanawha Presbytery [PCUS] in July of 1959, and served as a Presbyterian pastor for almost 50 years before being retired by North Texas Presbytery (PCA) in February 2007. Presbyterian churches served included the Winfield and Pliny congregations in Putnam Co., WV; Trinity in Montgomery, AL; Coral Ridge in Fort Lauderdale, FL; Northside in Burlington, NC; Second in Greenville, SC; Park Cities in Dallas, TX; and Christ in Flower Mound, TX.

Rev. Settle served as an executive for several conservative organizations whose efforts culminated in the formation of the Presbyterian Church in America in 1973. He was Coordinator of the Christian Education Ministry of the PCA, Director of Ministries at the Ridge Haven Conference Center (PCA) in Rosman, NC, Pastor-at-Large of North Texas Presbytery (PCA) and adjunct professor of Westminster Theological Seminary, Dallas, TX. Settle lectured in a number of seminaries and served on the boards of numerous Christian organizations.

His published writings include articles in professional magazines and several books: Changeless Truth in a Changing World – Meditations on the Westminster Confession of Faith; Memory Word Notebook; Studies in the Catechism; A Time to Die; and To God All Praise and Glory: the 25th Anniversary History of the PCA. He was listed in Who's Who in American Universities and Colleges (1955-1956), The Dictionary of International Biography (1970), Who's Who in Religion in America (1976). He served as moderator of the Eighth General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in America in 1980 and was honored for significant services to Christ and His Church by the thirty-seventh General Assembly in 2008. He was awarded an honorary doctorate degree by Westminster Theological Seminary in 2013.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by a son, Paul David Settle (Shirley), of Greenville; a daughter, Jo Lynne Sprouse, of Waynesville, NC; two sisters, Dorrie Settle Lee (Ted), of St. Petersburg, FL, and Joe Ellen Settle Rast, of Atlanta, GA; two granddaughters, Shelby Emerson (Matt) and Carly Sprouse; and a great granddaughter, Norah Emerson; four stepsons; and numerous step grandchildren and great grandchildren.

A private interment was held at Graceland East Memorial Park, with a memorial service held on Saturday, 24 March 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Second Presbyterian Church, Greenville, SC.
